Arita porcelain : Since the early 17th century, the Kyushu region has been renowned for its 'Arita' porcelain. Historically, it was Japan's first porcelain, and was exported to Europe and the Middle East as early as the middle of the 17th century by the first major Dutch traders. In the 18th century, on the initiative of the Edo government, the export of these products was limited, and then stopped, in order to satisfy the domestic market. Numerous houses (Kamamoto) and artists produced Arita porcelain. Some of them are recognised as "living human treasures" in Japan. From the 19th century onwards, Japan took the initiative in presenting Arita porcelain at international fairs and exhibitions, thus contributing to its worldwide reputation.
