"Banko" ceramics use petalite, a mineral belonging to the silicate family with excellent heat resistance. They are classified as semi-porcelain (stoneware), with properties somewhere between earthenware and porcelain. This is a local industry typical of the city of Yokkaichi, in Mie prefecture, and production began in the middle of the Edo period.
